Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Mater Dei Hospital, Malta

Mr. Charles Cini graduated from the University of Malta in 2001. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery.

Mr. Cini undertook early surgical training in Malta, at St. Luke’s Hospital and Mater Dei Hospital. He pursued his postgraduate studies in surgery at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, where he spent a year as a Fellow, followed by two years in subspecialty training in Colorectal and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Catholic University Hospital Leuven, Belgium. During this time, he became proficient in the latest technological advances in Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Mr Cini has authored several papers in peer-reviewed journals, with one notable achievement being a meta-analysis on the role of cytokines and matrix-metalloproteinases in the diagnosis of colorectal anastomotic leakage. His research had a significant impact in this field of surgery and patient care.

Currently, Mr. Cini serves as a Consultant in Colorectal and Minimally Invasive Surgery at both Mater Dei and St. James Hospitals in Malta. He is currently leading the introduction of Robotic Colorectal Surgery at Mater Dei Hospital. In addition to his clinical role, he holds the post of Lecturer at the University of Malta. He is also a tutor for postgraduate courses of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, an examiner for the Intercollegiate Membership Examination and a tutor and examiner for the Malta Post Graduate Surgical Training Program.

Ms Carolyn Sultana

Ms Carolyn Sultana BSc, MSc

Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, Visiting Lecturer, University of Malta

Ms. Carolyn Sultana is a Women’s & Men’s Health Physiotherapist currently working in private practice. A graduate of the University of Malta, she received her postgraduate Masters degree in Pelvic Health from the University of Bradford.

Ms. Sultana is a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malta. She is a member of the Malta Association of Physiotherapists and the Pelvic Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy (POGP) Association in the UK.

Ms Sultana specializes in pelvic floor rehabilitation particularly in people suffering from urinary and/or faecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, obstructive defaecation, urgency or straining. She works with women throughout their pregnancy to manage issues such as musculoskeletal pains and pelvic floor issues and postnatally to return to optimum physical fitness in a safe manner. She also treats patients with sexual pain and dysfunction as a result of pelvic floor disorders.

Dr Marco Grech

Senior General Practitioner at St Vincent de Paule Long Term Care Facility, Malta

Dr Marco Grech is a graduate of the University of Malta. Having completed training in General practice, he spent 17 years as a General Practitioner in private practice. Further specialisation led to his current appointment as a Senior General Practitioner at St Vincent De Paule Long Term Care Facility.

Dr Grech is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Malta College of Family Doctors and an International Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He was awarded a Masters degree in Primary Care and General Practice (University of Ulster) and a Masters degree in Medical Education (University of South Wales).

He holds various teaching posts with the University of Malta, Queen Mary University of London (Malta Campus), the University of South Wales and the University of Buckingham. He has presented and published in the fields of General Practice, Geriatric Medicine and Medical Education.

Mr James Kynaston

Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon, Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Stirling, Scotland UK

A graduate of the University of Aberdeen, Mr Kynaston completed his higher surgical training in the South-West of England prior to completing both a Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (TaTME) fellowship at the Royal United Hospital, Bath and then the Minimally and Maximally Invasive Colorectal Cancer (MiMICC) fellowship at St Marks Hospital, London. He also undertook a clinical observership in Seoul, South Korea.

On completion of his surgical training, Mr Kynaston was appointed to the post of Consultant in Colorectal and General surgery at NHS Forth Valley. He is the current Clinical Lead in Colorectal Cancer.

Mr Kynaston’s main interest is the surgical management of rectal cancer, undertaking both Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS), Laparoscopic and Robotic procedures for the management of primary rectal cancer.

Mr Kynaston has published widely on colorectal topics and has delivered many research presentations at both national and international meetings.

Dr Dorin Ziyaie

Dr Dorin Ziyaie MBChB MD FRCSEd, FRCSGenSurg

Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Clinical Lead General Surgery, NHS Tayside, Scotland UK

Dr Ziyaie graduated from Dundee in 1993, and obtained her postgraduate doctorate in Surgical Molecular Oncology from the University of Dundee in 2004. She was appointed as a consultant colorectal surgeon at Ninewells Hospital Dundee in 2006. Her main areas of clinical interest are colorectal cancer and pelvic floor dysfunction. She is a trained laparoscopic and robotic surgeon where 90% of the surgical resections as well as surgery for organ prolapse are delivered through minimal access.

Teaching and training have been at the heart of her non-direct clinical work. These activities have spanned from appointments as the Undergraduate Medicine Lead for Surgery to active member of organising faculty as well as course director for number of advanced colorectal courses at the Cuschieri Surgical Skills Centre in Dundee. Over the years she has hosted a number of clinical immersion courses in Dundee, as well as participating in training surgeons as invited trainer elsewhere in Scotland and UK. She is a member of the faculty of “Train the Trainers” and “Surgical Specialty Board in General Surgery” at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She is an examiner for the UK Intercollegiate Board in General Surgery. She has recently demitted office as the Scottish representative for The Pelvic Floor Society (TPFS-UK) and continues to represent Scotland on the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland (ACPGI) as a member of council. She oversees a fellowship programme in Pelvic Floor Surgery in Dundee which has seen completion of training for senior trainees from UK, Europe and Far East.

Dr Fabian Bonello

Dr Fabian Bonello graduated as a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Malta in 2012. On completion of his Foundation Programme in Malta, he decided to broaden his experience by moving to London, where he started Core Psychiatric training. During this period, he became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (2017). He then returned to Malta to complete his specialist training in Psychiatry in 2021. Between 2019-2021, Dr Bonello also sat for and successfully completed a Master in Geriatrics and Gerontology with the University of Malta. He has a special interest in subcortical dementias.

Mr John Camilleri-Brennan

A graduate of the University of Malta, Mr Camilleri-Brennan received his postgraduate surgical training in Malta, Dundee and Aberdeen. He was awarded a Travelling Fellowship by the RCPSG that enabled him to pursue further studies in colorectal surgery at the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA. His research on rectal cancer led to a doctorate from the University of Dundee. Following completion of surgical training, he was appointed as Consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery with NHS Forth Valley.

At Forth Valley he was responsible for formally introducing and developing a laparoscopic colorectal cancer service. He also set up a colorectal pelvic floor service, introducing endoanal ultrasound scanning and innovative surgical operations such as THD surgery for haemorrhoids, minimal access and transanal surgery for rectal prolapse, and pelvic floor reconstruction and anal implants for incontinence. In collaboration with his gynaecology colleagues, he developed a protocol for the clinical follow-up and treatment of patients with obstetric third and fourth degree tears.

In addition to his clinical work, he held posts as Clinical Lead in Colorectal Cancer and Bowel Cancer Screening with NHS Forth Valley. With the RCPSG he held posts as Associate Director of Surgical Examinations, Regional Advisor, College Tutor and Member of Council. He is currently the Vice-President (Surgical) of the RCPSG responsible for surgical education and training.

He is a Principal Investigator in a number of research projects, has published articles in major surgical journals, co-authored chapters in postgraduate surgical textbooks and has presented prize-winning papers at many national and international meetings. He is the recipient of the William Cullen Prize from the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

Mrs Mhairi Taylor

Mrs Mhairi Taylor BSc

Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist in UroOncology, Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Stirling, Scotland UK

Mrs Taylor obtained her nursing degree with merit from the University of Stirling before joining the Urology team at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. She developed a particular interest in continence care, going on to complete additional studies in bladder and bowel dysfunction before moving full time into the continence service. Whilst there she led service improvements and developed pathways and training guides for topics such as catheterisation, suprapubic catheter care and rectal irrigation systems, as well as arranging educational meetings for primary and secondary care staff.

Following this Mrs Taylor expanded her skills as an advanced clinical nurse specialist, initially at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre then back at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. She trained in gold seed implants to the prostate for radiotherapy and diagnostic TRUS biopsies of the prostate whilst continuing to provide independent clinics for continence and general care to urology patients.

Throughout her career Mrs Taylor has maintained an interest in continence care, service improvement and high quality care. This has now led to a new role at Care Inspectorate, although she has maintained clinical involvement with a part time ACNS role at the Beatson.

Mr Joby Taylor

Mr Joby Taylor BSc(Hons), MBChB, FRCSEd(Urol), FEBU

Consultant Urological Surgeon, Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Stirling, Scotland UK

Mr Taylor completed his undergraduate training at the University of Edinburgh before moving back to his native Yorkshire to complete his urological training. Whilst there he developed an interest in neuro-urology and functional urology working under some of the most respected names in the country. This led to an initial appointment at Pinderfields Hospital and regional spinal injuries unit before a move back up to Scotland in 2011 to join the team at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

At Forth Valley Mr Taylor has delivered and developed the functional urology service, introducing sacral neuromodulation and artificial urinary sphincter insertion into the region, and developing the botox, penile surgery and HoLEP services. He is an author of the BAUS suprapubic catheter guidelines and has also played a key part in developing national rUTI and haematuria pathways in Scotland.

In addition to his clinical work Mr Taylor is Audit and Governance lead for the unit, Chair of the Acute Drugs and Therapeutics Committee, a committee member of the Scottish Pelvic Floor Network and a Module Lead for the National Urology ST3 Bootcamp
